Reiki is a system of hands-on energy healing formalized in early 1900’s Japan by Mikao Usui who drew inspiration from Daoism and Tendai Buddhism. Ki (or Qi in Chinese) may be understood as the body’s electromagnetic field, influenced in acupuncture by needling surface meridians. Acupuncture points are known to have a lower resistance to electrical conductivity than surrounding tissues, and are thought to be organizing centers in key areas of the field. Reiki influences that field by a much more subtle means. Rei (or Ling in Chinese) is translated as spiritual, numinous, transcendent, or efficacious. It suggests the ability to invoke change through spiritual work…meditative practices that improve the flow of Qi and enable students of Reiki to similarly assist others through key areas on the body.
As with all methodologies, variants emerge over time as individual practitioners are influenced by their personal explorations and experiences. My own research into Chinese medicine combined with so me challenging life experiences has resulted in a style of Reiki that focuses on the genuine emergence of personal core being as the primary factor in the healthful flow of Qi. Rather than the common practice of bringing an outside influence in, Core Reiki seeks to bring what’s inside naturally out. You are your own best solution to any problem you face.
Reiki practitioners are generally not doctors, so cannot diagnose or treat any mental or physical disease. (As a holistic veterinarian, I can only diagnose and treat animals.) Reiki can assist the healing process, however, and preliminary studies have shown benefit for relaxation and emotional balance, pain relief, enhanced immunity, shortened healing time, improved blood counts, and normalization of blood pressure. Many hospitals now offer reiki as an adjunct to treatment.
I have been practicing reiki for twenty years, and am thrilled to announce I am now offering reiki treatments for humans! I am excited to provide the same relaxing, hands-on treatment for improved health I have provided my animal patients with for so many years to you. My r eiki will be practiced at a gym in Milwaukee during their off hours when it’s quiet.
