Many people call from out of state asking if I know of a holistic vet in their area. If you need one outside the greater Portland area, the best resource is the website for the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association – www.ahvma.org. They have a search engine with listings by state of member veterinarians practicing alternative medicine. The site lists what species they treat and what modalities they practice. You can then call to ask how long they’ve been practicing holistic medicine, what their training background is, and what percentage of their practice is focused on holistic care. All of these things make a difference in the outcome of your pets treatment.
There are some states lacking holistic vets altogether. Many states will permit a practitioner for humans to work on animals under the supervision of a veterinarian. If at all possible, however, it’s best to find a suitably trained veterinarian to ensure an adequate understanding of animal physiology, behavior, and response to medications. Animals are not small humans. They need their own whisker-lovin’ doctors. >”<
